16 Sep Port Technology Outcomes: What Coordination Actually Produced
Port technology outcomes are easy to promise and hard to evidence, which is why every procurement conversation I sit in eventually arrives at the same request: show me somewhere this actually worked.
It is a fair request. Below are two documented results, what they have in common, and — more usefully — how to interrogate any number a vendor puts in front of you, including these
Coordination Instead of Construction
Both examples share a starting condition worth naming, and it is the reason I keep returning to them. Neither facility added capacity in the physical sense. No berths, no yard, no additional buildings, and in both cases no meaningful increase in headcount
What changed was who knew what, and when. It is also the version that shows up fastest. A construction project delivers its benefit at the end, after the money is spent and the disruption absorbed. A coordination project delivers incrementally, from the first month more parties are working from the same information than were before.
A Major Canadian Port
Appointment-based truck management cut turnaround times by more than 40 percent and reduced unauthorized arrivals by more than 30 percent, with bookings matched to actual arrivals at better than 95 percent accuracy.
The third figure is the one I would pay attention to. A 95 percent match between bookings and actual arrivals is what makes the first two durable — it means the schedule reflects reality closely enough to plan against. A booking system producing a 40 percent improvement while only half the booked trucks arrived as scheduled would be a much weaker result wearing the same headline.
A Major Container Gateway
Community-wide coordination reduced container turnaround by 75 percent — a result documented by customs authorities and recognized with a United Nations award.
The provenance matters more than the percentage here. A number verified by an external authority is a different class of evidence from a number self-reported by the parties who benefited from it, and it is reasonable to weight the two differently. That principle applies to how you read this piece as well.
What Neither Result Tells You
Two things are worth saying plainly, because a case study that only points one direction is not much use to a buyer.
Neither figure tells you how long it took. Community deployments involve multiple independent parties, and the interval between go-live and a result like this is measured in quarters rather than weeks, because the technology goes in faster than the adoption follows. Neither tells you what the facility had to change internally, which in both cases was more than software. And a percentage says nothing about the starting point: a 40 percent reduction from a poor baseline and the same reduction from a strong one are very different achievements.
What the Two Have in Common
Neither result came from a single facility working harder in isolation. Both came from a community — multiple independent parties working from shared information, where previously each held a fragment and coordinated by telephone.

Improvements from one organization optimizing internally tend to be modest and tend to plateau. Improvements from several organizations no longer having to guess about each other tend to be larger, because the waste being removed was never inside any single
building.
Why the Pattern Matters More Than the Percentage
If a facility takes one thing from either example, I would rather it be the mechanism than the number. That is the part that travels.
A percentage from someone else’s facility is not a forecast for yours. The transferable part is the observation that coordination between parties released capacity that no single party could have released alone — and that is testable at your own site before anybody signs anything.
How to Read Any Vendor’s Numbers
Four questions, and they apply to the figures above as much as to anyone else’s. What was the baseline, measured how, and by whom? Over what period — a good week is not a result. Who verified it, and are they independent of the outcome? And is the facility comparable to yours in mode, volume, and constraint?
None of those four is hostile, and a vendor who treats them as hostile has answered them.One who can address all four is worth continuing with. One who cannot should prompt a simpler follow-up: what would you expect at a facility like mine, and what would we measure to find out? That question converts a claim into a testable prediction, which is the only form in which port technology outcomes are worth anything to a buyer.
